I’m looking after my parents house in Devon while they’re away on holiday – four cats, three fish, one dog and one duck to look after! All these animals make this empty house feel like a home and besides, in a couple of days, my fiancé will be arriving too.

In the meantime, I’ve been keeping myself busy: taking the dog for long walks in the forest, buying cake and flowers from the Women’s Institute, working on a wedding map (more on that later) and trawling the charity shops.

I’ve picked up some great things like these glasses for the limoncello. We’re going for a eclectic mix of old sherry glasses rather than the usual shot glass it is served in. Only 146 more to buy…!

For the candy buffet/sweet table, I also found an apothecary jar. They are surprisingly difficult to come by even in the net and I need about 4 of them. This one is way too small but gives a nice idea of what they will look like filled with sweets. Will have to keep my eyes open and my fingers crossed.

And then there were the many purchases that have nothing to do with the wedding but I thought I’d share with you.

The cherry stoner. I’d never used one before and when I tried it I was amazed at how effective it was. When I told my fiancé he said yes of course he had used one most people had and the next thing I’d been telling him about this marvellous device I’d discovered to remove screws from objects called a screwdriver! The cheek.

These cute little hammers are for breaking up toffee. I doubt I’ll ever need to break up a slab of toffee but I’m a sucker for things in miniature.

For my fiance’s 30th birthday recently I made a krispy kreme birthday cake with 60 doughnuts (and lots of candles and sparklers)! It was quite something and went down a storm. Homer Simpson would have been proud.

For the doughnut obsessed bride and groom why not have a doughnut cake instead of the traditional tiered wedding cake?

Here’s how to create a Krispy Kreme cake with instructions from the Krispy Kreme website:

The following instructions are based on using 2 dozen Original Glazed doughnuts and will result in formation of a ‘pyramid’ construction.

You will need a flat platter on which to assemble the cake:

Layer 1

1. Place six doughnuts in a ring formation
2. Fill in the space in the middle with one full doughnut
3. Cut one doughnut in pieces to fill any spaces in the first layer.
4. Place icing on top of this layer so it adheres to layer 2

Layer 2

5. Place five doughnuts on top of layer 1 again in a ring formation slightly inwards from the edge of layer 1
6. Place one doughnut inside the ring
7. If there are any gaps, cut a doughnut in pieces and place in the gaps

Remaining Layers

8. Keep layering in the same manner until you get to the crescent remembering to use one less doughnut in each layer to achieve the ‘pyramid’ effect and to bring the layer inward slightly from the edge of the lower layer.
9. Place one doughnut on top of the cake as the final layer.

Decorate!!

10. Here is where you can let all your creativity flow. Melt chocolate and drizzle over the outside, pipe cream into any gaps, use fruits to decorate such as raspberries & strawberries or just shake some icing sugar over your cake.

You may choose to use our Chocolate Iced Sprinkled doughnuts to decorate, by putting icing on the bottom of the doughnuts and attaching to the outside of the cake.

Adding your personal touches makes the cake all the more special.
11. Eat and enjoy!

A similar jar but filled with sweets is available at Treasure Island Sweets. The jar will hold approximately 800g of sweets and comes with your choice of sweets from Acid drops to Cola Fizzballs.

Such beautiful cakes!

Wedding cake designer Shinmin Li started baking wedding cakes after training in fine art. It’s not that jarring of a change, if you think about it. Li owns I Dream of Cake in San Francisco, and spends her time obsessing over cake consistency, design details, and whether her clients will eat the finished product.

As they say themselves “Wedding jellies are lighter and more refreshing than cakes. They are kinder to the stomach after a heavy meal so make it less likely for guest to fall asleep during the speeches!”.
