Brilliant idea from The Alternative Bride. I HATE going out in heels only to find my feet are in agony half way through the night. The bride-to-be has bought lots of cheap, colourful flip flops which will be in a basket in the bathroom in case of a painful feet emergency. Great way to keep everyone dancing till the wee small hours.

Escaping the Big Smoke and spending the weekend in the countryside with my parents is always great: home cooked meals, playing with the family dog Merlin and with my little brother on one of his blood thirsty video games. It also helps that where mum and dad live is home to The Best Charity Shops in the World.

So on a recent visit I picked a lusterware tea service, a book about Chester, a stuffed bird and lots of pretty sheet music. I rifled through a box of papers looking for interesting type and detail to use on our wedding invitations which were designing ourselves. The scrolls and lettering on these are great. Its also a really nice coincidence that this happens to be a wedding song.

Our invites will have a much more simplified version of these details but we want it to have an Edwardian/Victorian feel to it.

I came across this too…I couldn’t resist buying it!

I also bought a sweet copy of the bible so we can pick out one of our wedding readings. It must have been a gift to someone at their communion. It has a zip around it and gilt edged pages. It looks like its never been touched. Bad catholic!

We haven’t given much thought to the table seating plans or place cards as we still haven’t finalised the guest list for the wedding!

Here are some of my favourite ideas for escort cards so far:

Love this idea. Instead of the usual paper tissues why not provide vintage handkerchiefs for guests? My mum’s quite weepy so she might need a separate bowl full of hankies for herself…

Only by chance did I come across the phenomenon of video wedding invitations. It had never occurred to me that a wedding invite would be anything but paper and card. When you start thinking about the idea of a video invite you realise a great idea. They are quite practical as you can have separate DVD menus for different pieces of info such as how to get there, contact details etc. Its nice for the guests to hear your ‘real’ voice. And its a great opportunity to be inventive. Also the video can provide wedding guests with a lasting memento of the occasion.

I cannot even begin to imagine how long this first invite took to create. Truly a one-off!

Or have the both of you talk to camera. This video strikes just the right tone…

Or how about a invitation in the style of a black and white silent movie?
